Hawaiʻi has some of the highest termite activity in the country — especially the aggressive Formosan subterranean termite — and nearly every older Oʻahu home will deal with it at some point. Here's what to watch for and how the repair side actually works.
How to spot termite damage:
- Mud tubes — pencil-width dirt tunnels running up foundations, walls, or posts.
- Hollow or soft wood — tap trim, door frames, and window sills; damaged wood sounds hollow.
- Swarmers & wings — winged termites, or little piles of discarded wings near windows, usually in warmer months.
- Sagging floors, sticking doors, or bubbling paint — signs the structure underneath has been eaten away.
- Frass — tiny pellets of droppings left by drywood termites.
Treatment and repair are two different jobs.
Exterminating the termites is the pest-control company's job — tenting and fumigation, or soil treatment. Repairing the damage they leave behind is a licensed contractor's job, and that's where IBBUILDERS comes in. We rebuild what the termites destroyed: framing, subfloor, posts and beams, drywall, trim, flooring, and finishes — restored to solid, to-code condition.
Why it matters to fix it right.
Termite damage is structural. Left alone, it spreads into load-bearing framing and becomes a safety and resale problem. We assess how far it actually goes — often further than it looks — replace the compromised structural members properly, and rebuild the finishes so you'd never know it was there.
Prevention after repair:
- Keep wood, mulch, and standing moisture away from the foundation.
- Fix leaks fast — termites follow moisture.
- Use treated or termite-resistant materials in any rebuild (we do this by default).
- Stay on a regular inspection and treatment plan with your pest company.
How IBBUILDERS helps: we coordinate with your pest-control provider, assess the full extent of the structural damage, and rebuild it right — one licensed team, from framing to finish.
